finally got some good pictures of my outfit for meow wolf denver's second recycled fashion show!! the show was themed around "bloom" so i went carnivorous plant. the show itself was a blast and i'm super happy with how the outfit turned out!

them :) dino refs finally complete, so now i can make all the joke comics i want
design thoughts under the cut
aang- second hardest design to ge through. at first i couldn't decide on a species, and then i couldn't get the colors to work. believe it or not, bright yellow right next to bright blue is painful to look at. so instead i opted for an all orange color pallette. does he look like a candy corn? yes. and we love him for it. puny lil candy corn avatar
katara- sweet baby so easy, love her, perfect design, no tears shed except for joy. also GIGANTIC. non negotiable part of her design tbh. and aquatic dino!! spinosaurus was the only choice. the sail is meant to look like her necklace! isnt that cool. im so cool and talented.
sokka- nanuqsaurus is! maybe a cold weather dino. possibly. so we did that. he's smaller than his sister and he's mad about it :) also, him face is warriors paint!! and i know that atla water tribes didn't really have anything to do with orcas, but I love orcas and i wanted to give sokka some recognizably hunter-y pattern. so, orca white markings.
toPH- i am ENDLESSLY SUGFERING. do you know how many times i flip flopped on toph's species. do you understand how many hours i spent debating over the benefits of triceratops vs protoceratops?? ankylosaurus vs. pachysephalosaurus???? my agony is unending. im still unsure. sacrificing the concept that toph could take down a t rex (trike) for the small n unassuming character theme (proto). also the badgermole looking markings are cool i guess
zuko- this is where you pretend that im bot playing favorites when it comes to dino species. why is he a deinonychus? cuz i like big raptors, that's why. go away. dont look at me. he's cute. he looks like a bird and i love that for him. also something something aang and zuko similar species that specialize differently based on how their environments changed them, zuko an echo of the potential of flight and aang an echo of the potential to hunt. flock bird vs pack hunter. same but different.

i really cant say if it's accurate at all to the real dinos, but i was lazy and didnt want to do math, so it's just eyeballed heights. the important part is that we understand how tiny aang is and how massive katara is

one of these days i'm writing some kind of essay about lost media and humanity's need to solve loose ends. people only care about it because its lost. people only know its lost because somebody cared about it. it's such an achingly beautiful concept. it's such a horrifying fate. it's about mortality and the traitor that is memory and about love. its about the human spirit and a new kind of folklore. all forms of media preservation are a race against the deprecation and physical decomposition of their storage medium. i hope there's a heaven for art.

made a ref sheet for my dark urge, esper, in response to the deluge of bullshit i've drawn about them, and in anticipation of further bullshit to come. they're a nonbinary drow half-elf, they're a college of swords bard with 3 levels in assassin rogue -- definitely not the most ethical of resist!durges, since they do still solve most of their problems with murder, fear, and manipulation (it's what they're good at! a gift is a gift) but they do have standards, and they're trying their best to do right by their friends.

Genuinely love that Akechi is like an evil mastermind except not evil. He's a nice mastermind.
He knows everything about everyone but only uses that info to be helpful. He easily volunteers information from his own life and barely has any secrets. He has 5 backup plans for his best friend's birthday party to make sure they have a fun time. :)
Also he sets off everyone's primal lizard brain carnivore alarm despite actually being a sweetheart and that's what makes him sooooo much fun.

Meet the pitcher plant moths, Exyra semicrocea: one of the few insects badass enough to live their whole lives in a trap specifically evolved to kill their kind.
Pitcher plants are finely tuned to kill insects, with slippery sloping walls leading down to a pit of insect-dissolving digestive juices. But these little guys turned the tables! From the moment they hatch, they're a pitcher's nightmare.
The spiky blood-red caterpillars seal the pitchers' entrances and eat them from the inside out, using the death trap as their own personal sanctuary from predators. They have specialized feet to grip onto the slippery walls, and use silk as a safety line to keep themselves from falling to their deaths.
When they emerge as adults, they wait until nightfall and then go party in other pitchers.
Adults have only ever been observed to perch inside pitchers with their heads facing up. It's assumed that their grip only works in one direction, and if they slip up they could fall in (like the poor fly below).
So they seem to like living on the edge.

I just realized I haven't actually told all of you the wonderful variety that carnivorous plants can have! So many different styles and methods of catching their prey!!!
First, pitcher plants
They can come in all different shapes and sizes, but their goal is mostly all the same; attract insects by one method or another, get them to fall into the pitcher fluid, and extract the nutrients inside.
Sundews
have a lot of variety in the shape of their petioles (the leaf like structures with the sticky droplets on them) but most function essentially the same, attract bug, get bug stuck on the sticky glue on the ends of the many small hairs on the petioles, then excrete digestive fluid to extract the nutrients.
Venus flytrap
are the only species in its genus, so from standard plants there isn't much variety, but there are breeders out there who've made some weird looking plants if you're interested in looking it up.
These beauties have trigger hairs on the inside of each of the lobes of the trap, and if multiple trigger hairs are pressed within a few seconds of each other or the same hair is pressed twice, the trap closes, trapping the bug inside. then, digestive fluids are excreted, nutrients are extracted, and the trap re-opens to allow the insect carcass fall out or fly away in the wind.
There are many more kinds of carnivorous plants I'm excited to talk about one day, but in essence the goal of them all is to
-attract an insect
-capture the insect
-extract the nutrients from the insect
